SERVIA WINS HIS FIRST CHAMP CAR RACE
By: Jacques Cupé (GR&D)August 28, 2005 MONTREAL, Quebec -- Oriol Servia took a gamble when he left his race seat with Dale Coyne Racing to go to a temporary seat with Newman/Haas Racing to replace an injured Bruno Junqeira. After several strong runs, that gamble paid off big when Servia won his first career Champ Car World Series Sunday at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. The first half of the race was dominated by pole-sitter Sebastien Bourdais who led the first 53 laps before a full-course caution closed the field together and launched a series of alternate pit strategies, which included rookie Timo Glock pitting before the yellow flew and the pits closed. Bourdais lost the lead to Glock and dropped to fourth with a tire-mounting problem. Losing out worse was Paul Tracy who slid too deep into his pit box and hit a crewman. After he was repositioned in the box, he lost nine spots. Servia restarted third and passed Justin Wilson into the final chicane. He ran down Glock before debris from Rodolfo Lavin's car caused another caution. When the race went green again, Servia intensified the pressure. Servia forced Glock into a mistake twice, with the German straight-lining the chicane both times. On the second occasion, Champ Car officials ordered Glock to give the position up to Servia giving the Spaniard his first win.
